Dutch student's research experiences in India

Wouter van de Pol & Peter Slooff are students from the University of Groningen who have spent 5 weeks in India beginning May’09 to research the possibilities for a Dutch company to be able to launch an agro fertilizer in the Indian market. The iOpportune.com team had the opportunity to catch up with them over a cup of coffee at Café Coffee day at Himayatnagar to understand their research experiences in India.

1.Why did your university decide to send students to India in particular for a research project/Internship?
Ans: - Well considering the fact that India is one of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries it was the best option to do our Research Project/Internship here.

2.What kind of market did you find India to be? Do you think that the product (fertilizer) which you have researched on will have market here?
Ans: - It’s a complicated market to deal with. The government plays a major role in the fertilizer market. It has a lot of regulations as well. This will definitely make it very difficult for a foreign player to enter the market.

3.What is the kind of exposure did you get from doing your research project in India?
Ans: - India was selected as the place to do our Project Work this year and we also got a lot exposure as we meet a lot people from the government and the Agricultural Industry.

4.How well did the Indian people accept you and support you in the research?
Ans: - - (Laughs) we had a very different experience on the first day here in India. We had an appointment with an official, no doubt he was there on time but then he told us that he had some work and said that he will be back in 5 minutes but to our surprise it turned out to be 55 minutes!! Our basic aim was to go down to the farmers themselves to know the fertilizer market. These people were unbelievably supportive which definitely helped us.

5. How diverse do you think the India is? You started your project from Mumbai, travelled through Bangalore and to finish it up now in Hyderabad.
Ans: - Mumbai has a lot of people; it is a very crowded place. The poverty was overwhelming. Bengaluru is a very organized city, nice place to be in. Well in Hyderabad we had to commute by the auto rickshaw which was a tricky business because we really didn’t understand how the “meter” functioned

6. Any specific food you like in India?
Ans: - oh! Yes! Butter Naan and Murg Maska Wala…

7.When do you go back home and do you plan to have a holiday after this hectic research work in India?
Ans:- (laughs) Home? We still have 5 weeks to go in India. The 5 weeks spent in Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad was just serious research project work that we did. Now we have another 5 weeks to holiday :-)

8. That’s cool. Which places in India will you now travel to?
Ans: - Rajasthan, Amritsar, Agra…The Taj Mahal, Manali
